At the beginning of Autumn Term Year 12 and 13 pupils are asked to volunteer to be a Reading Mentor to a Year 7 pupil and hear them read two or three times a week for 15 minutes each session. Ms Lovell, the Librarian, kindly accommodates, storage space for the folders as well as advice about choosing appropriate books.

The scheme is very simple to use and after an hours training from Ms Brumby all the volunteers are ready to start hearing the Year 7 pupils read. Half a term later the impact of this scheme begins to show. The mentees are more confident, they enjoy reading and all are reading more difficult books. They also benefit from knowing an older pupil in the school.

The Year 12 and 13 pupils feel they are making a difference to the lives of the young people they mentor. What greater gift can you give to a young person than that of being literate.

Well done to the Year 12 and 13 pupils who make a commitment that they keep each week and well done to the Year 7 pupils who remember to go to the Library on the right day and at the right time.
