Organisation

Year 7

For at least the first two weeks help your child to organise themselves for the next day. Have a place somewhere in the house to keep their books. It could be a box with a labelled folder for each subject, it could be a shelf, a drawer or a cupboard. Wherever you decide make sure a younger brother or sister won’t have access to the books.
When your child comes home from school check for personal study. Agree a time and place to begin personal study.  It doesn’t matter when personal study is done as long as a routine is established in a place that is free from distractions. It isn’t a good idea to get up early to do personal study, it never happens.

Personal Study related illness

Not doing personal study and worrying about going to a lesson without it can result in an instant stomach ache or headache. The medical room is often the first port of call when personal study isn’t ready to hand in. Once personal study is completed check the planner to find out what lessons your child has the next day. The planner will tell you if it is week A or week B and then a look at the timetable will tell you which lessons they have. Initially you will need to give your child a lot of support but don’t make the mistake of doing it for them. It is vital to get this routine going when they first start in Year 7 while everything is new. It will pay dividends later on.

Personal Study Clubs in school

The Learning Support Department is open to students from 8 am until the bell goes at 8.30 am to complete personal study. At lunchtime a Year 12 or 13 student is sometimes available in Learning Support to help with personal study and twice a week Learning Support Staff are available. Students may come any lunchtime for personal study club. The Library is open before, during and after school until 5pm from Monday – Thursday for students to use the computers, complete personal study and take out books.

Food Technology

If you don’t want to join the many parents in the late night supermarket, plan ahead. Ingredients are usually remembered as your child is going to bed, check for the recipe before you do your weekly shop. Food Technology practical lessons are generally every two weeks. The recipe is handed out one week and the dish is made the next. Alert yourself on the calendar. Hint – buy a big calendar.

PE kit

A different kit is needed for each lesson. One is indoors and requires T shirt shorts and trainers, the other outdoors and requires rugby tops and boots. Once every half term everyone does a cross country run on the playing field. Find out which lesson you need which kit for.
