St Crispin’s School has recently joined with Reading FC to offer an exciting programme for talented sports leaders. This course is open to male and female students who are serious about a career in sports and coaching and who are looking for a mix of studying and sporting opportunities.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 including English Language.

If you have not passed Maths GCSE at a grade 4 or above, this GCSE will need to be re-sat alongside the Reading FC programme.

If the course is over-subscribed, selection will be based on students meeting the academic entry requirement and then footballing ability as judged by a Reading FC official.

Course Content

This is a two year vocational programme with academic and practical elements. The programme will include two A Levels or Level 3 BTECs and a range of footballing and coaching certificates. These courses will include practical qualifications from the Football Association on coaching, safeguarding and first aid and from the Professional Football Association workshops on equality and diversity and confidence and self-esteem.

On a daily basis, students will train with Reading FC coaches to develop their football skills and coaching styles. Along with timetabled lessons, students will also compete in a regional football league and national competitions.

Once students have undertaken their safeguarding and coaching certificates, all students will lead coaching sessions in school and across the community in local primary schools or leisure centres.

Future Opportunities

This programme is all about employability. Successful students will leave the school with the knowledge and experience to play and coach football with the academic qualifications to step into a university. With these skills many students could find themselves working in community programmes for charities or football clubs or working in the leisure industry. Following further education, careers open to students range from PE teacher, personal trainer, football coach, or sports or football development officer.
