Policy for Talented Pupils in PE

St. Crispin’s School is committed to the principle of providing the best possible learning opportunities for all of its pupils. Within the context of this broad aim, it is important to:

1. Cater for the specific needs of pupils who show a particular aptitude in Physical
Education and Sport.

2. Work with external partners to cater for those pupils who have a high level of
demand made upon their time as a result of their involvement in high level
sporting activities outside school.

Aims

• To identify and support those pupils who are potentially able to perform at a level
• substantially exceeding that which is expected for their age.
• To help talented pupils develop personal qualities which will enable them to maximise their potential.
• To encourage the expression of talent.
• To encourage pupils to recognise the benefits and challenges of being a talented performer.
• To set talented pupils targets which encourage them to work to their potential.
• To challenge and support talented pupils through the organisation of the PE curriculum and clubs.

Implementation

Provide opportunities through:

• Multi-skills clubs and academies
• Attending Talented Days (primary & secondary)
• IEPs for identified pupils with dispensation occasionally from curriculum subjects with mentors helping to set targets.
• Guidance about different pathways which exist in sport that may be beneficial for future development.
• Differentiation of lessons by grouping pupils through talent/maturation with appropriate choice of task and use of equipment.

Enrichment Activities

Provide opportunities through:

• Visits to national centres of excellence.
• Talks from International Athletes and other exceptional performers.
• Participation in master classes.
• Watching international athletes perform.
• Talks by specialists i.e. physiotherapists, psychologists, nutritionists.

Identification of Talented Pupils

A ‘Talented Pupil’ refers to one whose performance or potential performance substantially exceeds the majority of his/her peers. (potential Level 7 and above by end of ks3)

The qualities that a teacher should look for which may indicate that a pupil is talented, should extend beyond ‘working at county, regional or national levels’.
Talented pupils in PE need to be selected using two areas:

1. Those already achieving highly in selective sports
2. Those that have potential for high achievement

In order to support the identification of pupils with potential, generic characteristics of talented performers need to be identified. Talented pupils may perform exceptionally well in one sport or to a good standard in many.

The National Curriculum strands can be interpreted into a set of abilities that can be identified and developed within Physical Education:

Physical, Social, Cognitive, Personal and Creative.

Talented pupils in Physical Education are likely to excel in one or a combination of these abilities.

Physical (All Rounder and in One Sport)
• Have a high degree of control and co-ordination of their bodies
• Show strong awareness of their body in space
• Combine movements fluently, precisely and accurately in a range of contexts and activities

Social (Leadership)
• Good decision makers and able to take the initiative, often showing high levels of autonomy, independence and leadership
• Motivating and encouraging others to maximise performance

Cognitive (Theory and Leadership)
• Intelligent, independent, thoughtful performers, actively forming and adapting strategies and tactics
• Able to reflect on processes and outcomes in order to improve performance

Personal (Leadership)
• Confident in themselves, working with initiative
• Take risks with ideas and approaches and be able to think more laterally
• Show a high degree of motivation and commitment to practice and performance

Creative (All Rounder and in One Sport)
• Original and adaptable, responding quickly to new challenges and situations often finding solutions to them
• Able to choreograph or compose innovative sequences of movement
